Dr. Wallace is the Fred C. Andersen Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic and Director of Research and Innovation of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
He received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1992. He completed a residency program in Internal Medicine in 1995 and a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 1998 at the Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and a Master’s in Public Health with a focus on clinical research at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Wallace completed an advanced endoscopy fellowship in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in 1999 at the Medical University of South Carolina under Dr. Peter Cotton and Robert Hawes.
He joined the Mayo Clinic in 2003 and was promoted to full professor in 2007, and to Chair of the Division in 2010. Dr. Wallace served multiple roles for the AGA, ASGE and ACG including Associate Editor for Gastroenterology 2006-09, Chairs of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) committee on Artificial Intelligence 2018-22. From 2015-23, he was Editor in Chief of the peer reviewed medical journal, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy raising that journal’s impact to the highest in the world of endoscopic journals. From 2021-24, he was the Chair of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Sheik Shakhbout Medical City, as well as outpatient practice chair, Simulation Center director, and Chair of the Artificial intelligence committee in partnership with Mayo Clinic, in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E..
As a research, he has published more than 450 peer reviewed scientific papers in journals including Nature, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Physical Review Letters, Gastroenterology, Gut among others and holds an H-Index of greater than 100, among the top 0.1% of scientist worldwide. His research focuses on early detection and intervention of gastrointestinal cancers. His current NIH RO1 funded research aims to develop AI/Radiomic tools to detect occult pre/early pancreatic cancers in at-risk individuals.
Dr. Wallace also co-lead the Mayo Clinic Procedural Innovation Team and Digestive Disease Innovation and Research Teams, utilizing simulation based device and procedure development. This led to more than 20 patent filings, and several business startups.
